Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton were the big winners of the weekly track & field Athlete of the Week honors as both schools had two athletes claim one of the awards.
The Mustangs had Carl Dargitz, a junior from San Diego, claim the Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Julie Dufresne, a senior from Santa Cruz, won the Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor. Dargitz won the steeplechase at the Fresno State Dual, crossing the finish line in an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 9:03.41. Dufresne was a dual event winner at the Fresno State Dual, recording marks of 47-06.75 in the shot and 149-00 in the discus. Her effort in the shot put is an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
The Titan winners of the track & field honors went to Ciara Short and Jonathan Golden who won the Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Men's Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.
Short, a sophomore from San Diego, won two individual events and was part of a winning relay team at the Aztec Invitational. She won the 200 (24.07) and 400-meter (55.14) individually, then anchored the 4x100 relay contingent to the top of the podium at 46.64. Her two individual events are the best times in the Big West so far, while her 200 time is the best performance in school history with or without being wind legal.
Golden, a senior from Azusa, won the high jump at the Aztec Invitational with a mark of 07-01. His effort was an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark, leads the Big West and came in his first competition of the outdoor season.
