The final Big West Track & Field honors of the 2008 outdoor season went to two schools as UC Davis and Irvine claimed the penultimate honors.
On the track side of the awards, it was an Aggie sweep as Polly Gnepa (Turlock, Calif.) and Sirena Williams (Fresno, Calif.) claimed the Men's and Women's Athlete of the Week honors, respectively. Gnepa was fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.23) and tops in the 110 hurdles (14.01) at the Aggie Twilight last weekend. His time in the hurdles set a school record by .01 seconds. Meanwhile Williams came through with an effort of 12.82 in the 100 and a first place showing of 13.93 in the 100 hurdles. Her time in the hurdles broke her own school record of 13.96 set earlier in the season.
The lone field honor went to Matt Lahti of UC Irvine after his performance at the Oxy Invitational last Saturday. The Murrieta, Calif., native recorded an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 192-03 in the hammer throw which ranked second in the field. Lahti’s effort was a personal best mark by 10 feet and ranks him fourth all-time in Anteater history.
