The first repeat winner of the women's weekly track & field awards headlined this week's Big West honors as UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) claimed the women’s track Athlete of the Week honor.

Martinez ran a 4:19.81 in the 1500-meter run at the Stanford Invitational, good for fourth place and setting a personal best in the process. The time was also a school record, an NCAA regional qualifying time, puts her at #2 in the West Region and #6 nationally and narrowly missed the “B” standard for the US Olympic Trials.

The men's side of the track award went to Alex Freitas of Long Beach State, a fellow competitor at the Stanford Invitational. The native of Ceres, Calif., ran an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 1:49.39 in the 800, as well as a solid time of 3:51.62 in the 1500. He also ran a leg of the second place 49er 4x400-meter relay team that finished second with a time of 3:11.97. He currently ranks sixth nationally and second in the West Region in the 800 and set a personal record with his time in the 1500.

The field side of the awards ledger went to Justin Johnson of Cal State Northridge (men) and Alisha Misiata of UC Irvine (women).

Johnson finished sixth in the decathlon at the Texas Relays with 7,473 points, breaking a 26-year old school record. He posted seven personal records out of 10 events.

Misiata broke her own school record in the shot put for third time this season with a mark of 50-07, finishing second in the event at the Stanford Invitational. She broke her previous record of 50-06 set just two weeks ago.
