UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez continued her stellar outdoor track season with her third Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week award of 2008 it was announced today. It marked the second time in three weeks that she has been honored with the accolade.
Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) ran the 800 in 2:05.71 to win the University Open at the Mt. SAC Invitational and took sixth in the 1500 (4:19.53) after being the leader for most of the race. Her time was a personal best, a school record and is right at the "B" qualifying standard for the Olympic Trials.
The men's side of the track awards went to Dayne Comrie (Saugus, Calif.) of UC Irvine, the second time this season he claimed the weekly honor. Comrie won the 400-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 46.59, the third-best time in Anteater history.
The field honors went to a pair of athletes who won their first weekly award of the season. The Men's Field Athlete of the Week went to Cal State Northridge’s Reindell Cole (Las Vegas, Nev.), while the Women's Field Athlete of the Week was awarded to Cal Poly's Sharon Day (Costa Mesa, Calif.).
Cole finished fifth in the long jump at the Mt. SAC Invitational, posting a mark of 25-8.75. His mark was a season-best and furthered his NCAA Regional qualifying effort.
Day, the 2005 national outdoor high jump champion, had an effort of 6-2.00 in a jumpoff in the event at the Mt. SAC Invitational to finish in second place.
