Long Beach State's time at the Nike Invitational last week was extremely productive as the 49ers claimed all four Big West Track & Field weekly awards following performances at the meet.
On the men's side of the honors,
Brent Gray (Carson, Calif.) and
Rob Jennings (Campbell, Calif.) won the Track Athlete of the Week and Field Athlete of the Week awards, respectively. Gray continued his march toward another All-America honor with a first place finish in both the 100 (10.41) and 200 (21.13) in addition to running the anchor legs on the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. His times in the 100 and 200 were NCAA Regional qualifiers, he currently ranks first in the 100 and second in the 200 in the West Region and both times also rank him at the top of the Big West.
Jennings picked up a pair of NCAA Regional qualifying marks at the Nike Invitational in the discus and hammer. He posted a toss of 171-09 in the discus and a mark of 195-07 in the hammer, good for fourth place in both events. His performances were season-bests and the top marks in the conference so far.
The women's track award went to
Jessica Branker, while
Alex Shaw rounded out the LBSU sweep with the women's field honor. Branker ran to second place finishes in the 100 (11.70) and 200 (23.99), while running a leg of the third place 4x100-meter relay team. Her performance in the 100 was a NCAA Regional qualifying time, she ranks second in the West Region in the 100 and ranks first in the Big West in the 100 and 200.
Shaw put forth an effort of 167-05 in the javelin to claim second place in the event at the Nike Invitational. This mark shattered her previous lifetime best (160-06) and ranks third regionally and fifth nationally in the event.
