The first weekend of action on the Big West schedule saw many bright performances as the four winners of this week’s Big West Track & Field Athletes of the Week all came from different schools.
On the track side of the ledger, the men’s Athlete of the Week award was won by
Ryan Martin of UC Santa Barbara, while the women’s honors went to
Ugo Eke of UC Davis. Martin scored a wire-to-wire win in the 800-meter run at the All-UC Invitational on his way to the weekly award. He ran the race in 1:52.41. Eke had an impressive showing at the same meet with four championship efforts. She won individual crowns in the 200- (24.83) and 400- (46.83), while running legs on both the winning 4x100- (47.05) and 4x400- (3:48.70) relay squads.
The field awards saw Cal State Fullerton’s
Jonathan Golden (men) and UC Riverside’s
Jackie Lewis (women) claimed the honors. Golden competed in the high jump at the Cal State Challenge and came away with a first place finish after posting a mark of 2.11 meters. Lewis got her season started off in a big way at the All-UC Invitational, scoring first place in the long jump with an effort of 5.91 meters. The mark was just off the regional qualifying mark of 6.00 meters.
