After having one school claim three of the four weekly track & field awards a week ago, winners from four different squads garnered the Big West Track & Field awards this time around.
The track awards saw Sky Johnston of UC Irvine (Quartz Hill, Calif.) and Cristina Olivas of UC Riverside (Bloomington, Calif.) take home the honors. Johnston won the 3000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 8:59.48 at the Collegiate Classic. His blistering pace was the eighth-fastest time in Anteater history. Olivas also competed in the steeplechase and delivered a remarkable time of 10:28.45. Her time was a NCAA regional qualifying mark, a UCR school record, a lifetime best in her first steeplechase ever and the fastest time in the NCAA thus far this season.
The field side of the ledger saw Long Beach State's Rob Jennings (Campbell, Calif.) and Cal State Northridge's Krystal Quinn claim the weekly men's and women's honors, respectively. Jennings took home the gold in the discus with a toss of 181-0 and claimed second place in the hammer after a mark of 196-0 at the Trojan Invitational. Both performances were NCAA regional qualifying marks and rank him tops in the Big West. Quinn claimed the second straight women's field award for the Matadors after an impressive effort in the pole vault at the Trojan Invitational. Her second place mark of 13-1.50 broke the CSUN outdoor record which she previously held at 12-5.50.
