UCR Claims Second Weekly Track & Field Award,Cal Poly, UCI and LBSU Athletes Also Honored

UC Riverside claimed its second weekly track & field honor of the season, while Cal Poly, UC Irvine and Long Beach State notched their first weekly awards of the season.

On the men's side, Dayne Comrie (Saugus, Calif.) of UC Irvine won the award after he finished second to two-time Olympian Tyree Washington in the 400 meters with a time of 47.55 at the Ben Brown Invitational. Chris Richardson (Downey, Calif.) of Long Beach State claimed the weekly men’s field honor after a stong performance in the javelin and pole vault at the Ben Brown Invitational. He recorded an event-winning mark of 220’-10’’ in the javelin and 14’-1’’ in the pole vault. Both marks were lifetime bests for the athlete picked by Track & Field News to win the 2008 Decathlon title at the NCAA Championships.

The women's awards saw UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) claim the Track Athlete of the Week, while Julie Dufresne (Santa Cruz, Calif.) of Cal Poly won the Field Athlete of the Week. Martinez ran 16:27.51 to win the Ben Brown 5000m run, which this also set a new school record and qualified her for NCAA Regionals. Dufresne won both the shot put and the discus at the UCLA Invitational. She recorded a mark of 48-1.25 in the shot put and 157-00 in the discus to qualify for NCAA Regionals in both events.
