The weekly track & field awards have a familar flavor this week as each of the winners has claimed at least one weekly honor previously this season.
On the track side of the ledger, Cal Poly's Phillip Reid (Oxnard, Calif.) took home his third Men’s Track Athlete of the Week award following his performance at the Mt. SAC Relays last weekend. The senior finished the 1500-meter run in 3:44.41, a new personal best and the fourth-best mark all-time at Cal Poly. The women's award was won by Cal State Northridge's Deanna Goodwin (San Francisco, Calif.), the second time she's claimed the award during the 2007 outdoor season. Goodwin, a senior, ran the 200-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays in a personal best 23.68 then went out at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee/Rafer Johnson Invitational Invitational and set a Northridge record with her 400-meter dash time of 52.92. She also ran legs for the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay squads that posted NCAA Regional qualifying marks.
Aris Borjas (Clovis, Calif.) gave Cal Poly its second weekly winner and its second athlete to have three weekly honors this season as he was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. The senior claimed the award after setting a personal best in the javelin at the Mt. SAC Relays with a toss of 225-2.00. Rounding out the weekly honors was UC Irvine's Lauren Collins (Lake Forest, Calif.) who garnered Women's Field Athlete of the Week. The sophomore, who also won the award April 4, set a school record with 5,446 points at the Mt. SAC Relays in the heptathlon. She broke a UCI mark that had stood for 20 years by 79 points.
