Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara each had competitors take home the first track & field honors of the 2007 outdoor season as the Mustangs swept the track accolades, while the Gauchos won the field honors.

Cal Poly’s Phillip Reid (Oxnard, Calif.) garnered the Men’s Track Athlete of the Week award, while teammate Cassie Atkinson (San Diego, Calif.) did the same on the women’s side. Reid was second in the two mile run at the UCLA Invitational, finishing the race in 8:41.59, just .02 slower than the winner. Atkinson competed in the 1500-meter run at the same meet, finishing second with a time of 4:33.70, a new personal record.

UC Santa Barbara’s sweep on the field side came thanks to John Delaney (Ventura, Calif.) on the men’s side and Amy Haapanen on the women’s end. Delaney achieved an NCAA Regional mark in the javelin at the All-UC meet with his event-winning toss of 62.26 meters. Haapanen had a solid day herself at the All-UC meet...three NCAA Regional marks and three first-place finishes in her first meet of the outdoor season. Her first victory came in the shot put with a winning effort of 14.82 meters. She followed that up with a toss of 47.37 meters in the discus, then wrapped up the day with a heave of 61.54 meters in the hammer.
