LBSU's Gray and CSUN's Goodwin Claim Weekly Honors in Track, while Cal Poly's Borjas and UCSB's Haapanen Repeat Field Accolades

Cal Poly's Aris Borjas and UC Santa Barbara's Amy Haapanen claimed their second weekly field honors of the 2007 season, while Long Beach State's Brent Gray and Cal State Northridge's Deanna Goodwin garnered the weekly track accolades.

Borjas (Fresno, Calif.) earned the honor after a strong performance in the javelin at the Cal Poly Invitational. The 2006 Big West champion in the event posted a mark of 223-8.25 to take home the gold as well as achieving an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Haapanen (Manteca, Calif.) had an outstanding day at the Northridge Invitational as she threw a personal-best mark of 212-00 in the hammer, the second-best showing in the national. Haapanen broke her own conference and school record for third third time this year and was the top collegian in the event. She also recorded a season-best of 50-1.75 in the shot put.

On the track side, Long Beach State’s Gray (Carson, Calif.) had an excellent showing at the Long Beach Relays. The junior took first in the 100-meter with a time of 10.29 and in the 200-meter with a time of 20.92 (+2.4). He qualified for NCAA Regionals with both times and established a school record in the 100-meter. Deanna Goodwin (San Francisco, Calif.) claimed the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after winning a pair of events at the Northridge Invitational. The senior won the 100-meter with a time of 11.87, while also topping the competition in the 200-meter.

Local Meets Highlight Coming Weekend of Big West Track & Field Action

Six of the seven Big West track squads will be in action this weekend in local meets as the outdoor track & field season hits full swing.

Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State will all be in the Los Angeles area as they compete in the Trojan Invitational hosted by USC. Michigan, Texas A&M, New Mexico, Washington State and Loyola Marymount are some of the other schools slated to compete in the one-day event.

Meanwhile, UC Irvine welcomes UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, Cornell, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer, St. John's and Yale to Anteater Stadium for the Collegiate Classic Friday and Saturday. Friday’s competition features the men's and women's hammer throw beginning at 2:00 p.m., with the steeplechase races starting at 6:00 p.m., the 1500 meters at 6:40 p.m. and the 3,000 meters at 7:05 p.m.

On Saturday, the field events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the first track event scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
