Cal Poly Takes Home Third Weekly Award of the Season, while Long Beach State and UC Riverside Pick Up Honors

Long Beach State was the big winner this week as they took home two of the four weekly honors with Cal Poly and UC Riverside claiming the other two awards.

The 49ers claimed the Men's Track Athlete of the Week in Jesus Santana (Riverside, Calif.) and the Women's Field Athlete of the Week in Jill Reynolds (Castaic, Calif.) Santana set a personal best of 14:47.40 in the 5,000-meter run at the Ben Brown Invitational, besting his previous best of 15:02 last season. Reynolds won the pole vault at the Ben Brown with a personal-record mark of 13’-1.5’’, the second-best result in LBSU history.

Cal Poly picked up its third weekly award of the season as Aris Borjas garnered Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Ben Brown Invitational. The senior recorded a park of 218’ in the javelin to take home the gold.

The final weekly honor went to UC Riverside as Brenda Martinez was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week. The freshman finished second at the Ben Brown in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:41.97. Her time broke the Highlander record by 40 seconds, qualified her for NCAA Regionals and was the first time she ran the 5,000.

Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State to Host Meets this Week

Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State headline this week's track & field schedule as the trio are set to host meets this weekend.

The Mustangs will host the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo with the hammer event to take place Friday, while the track competitions are on Saturday.

The Matadors hit the track for the first time in the 2007 outdoor season with the Spring Break Open Wednesay and Thursday, then continue their busy week with the Northridge Invitational Friday and Saturday. CSUN will see some familar faces at the Northridge Invitational as UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are slated to compete.

Long Beach State, fresh from the NCAA Indoor Championships, will move outdoors and host the 66th annual Long Beach Relays Saturday on Jack Rose Track.
