Cal Poly's Joe Gatel and Aris Borjas claimed the Big West Male Track and Field Athletes of the Week, while Mustang Cassie Atkinson grabbed the female athlete of the week honors, for the week ending April 30. Also earning the conference's weekly award is Long Beach State's Katelyn Ciarelli, who earned the female field athlete of the week. This is the first recognition of the season for all four athletes.
Competing in a dual meet with UC Santa Barbara last week, Gatel ran the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:46.92 to claim the top prize. As a true freshman, he posted a NCAA Regional qualifying mark and currently leads the Big West.
Teammate Aris Borjas, earned the male field athlete of the week with a throw of 218-2 in the javelin. His distance earned him a first place finish at the dual meet.
On the women's side Cal Poly struck again, earning the female track athlete of the week for the efforts of Cassie Atkinson. In the 800 meters, the San Diego, Calif., native won the 800 meters in a time of 2:11.75.
Representing Long Beach State, Katelyn Ciarelli was named female field athlete of the week with her performances at the Steve Scott Invitational. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native recorded a mark of 158-7 in the discus to finish third. Ciarelli's distance was only one inch short of her personal best. She also placed eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 153-4.
