Three Athletes Earn Their Second Award, One Earns Her First Honor Of The Season

Anthony Brown (Cal State Northridge), Chris Richardson (Long Beach State) and Deirdre Byrne (Cal Poly) all claimed their second Big West Track & Field Athlete of the Week honor, for the week ending April 16, while Cal State Northridge's La'Shana Verdon earned her first weekly honor.

Brown, competing in the 110m hurdles, finished second at the Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 13.88. With his impressive NCAA provisional time, he broke his own school record. On March 27, the Seattle, Wash., native earned his first honor of the year for his efforts in the 100m hurdles.

Earning his second consecutive male field athlete of the week honor is Chris Richardson. The 49er posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the decathlon with a score of 7,605 at the California Heptathlon/Decathlon. He also posted a regional qualifying distance of 204-3 in the javelin. The Downey, Calif., native currently holds the 14 best mark in the world in the decathlon, which also set a LBSU school record.

Byrne, grabbed her second female track athlete of the week honor for the 2006 season after her strong showing in the 1,500 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays. Hailing from Guinness, Ireland, the Mustang finished third with a time of 4:17.74. Earlier this season she earned Big West's weekly honor in the same event.

The only athlete to receive the conference's recognition for the first time this year is Matador La'Shana Verdon. She secured the top honor after finishing ninth in the heptathlon with 5,125 points. Her performance at the Mt. SAC Relays was a regional-best and is an NCAA provisional score.
