For the week ending March 26, Cal State Northridge's Anthony Brown and UC Irvine's Mike Beerer nabbed the Big West Male Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors, while on the women's side Mustang Deirdre Byrne and Matador Bobbie Patton claimed the top honors.
Brown, hailing from Seattle, Wash., ran a time of 13.92 in the 110M hurdles at the USC Trojan Invitational. His third place time, which was an NCAA Regional Qualifier, broke the nine-year old Cal State Northridge record.
With a throw of 211-2 in the hammer event at the UC Collegiate Classic, Anteater Mike Beerer enhanced his second-best mark using only three of the six allotted tosses. The La Canada, Calif. claimed the top prize in the hammer event with a series of throws that were 210-4, 211-2 and 208-5. This is the fourth consecutive week a UC Irvine athlete, male or female, has received such recognition.
Competing at the USC Trojan Invitational, Cal Poly's Deirdre Byrne posted a first place time in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:24.50. The Guinness, Ireland, native currently leads the Big West in the event and is an NCAA Regional Qualifier.
Earning Cal State Northridge's first Big West Female Field Athlete of the Week honor this season is Bobbie Patton (Santa Maria, Calif.). The junior threw the shot put for a distance of 47-0.75 to finish third at the USC Trojan Invitational. Patton’s time qualified her for the NCAA Regionals.
