Cal Poly’s Morse, Idaho’s Kamau Named Big West Track Athletes Of The Week

Cal Poly senior Travis Morse (Palmdale, CA) collected Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors after a blazing performance in the 100 meters at the Cal Poly Five-Way meet. He finished second in a time of 10.32, which leads all Big West sprinters in that event this season. The time also qualified him for the NCAA Regionals.

Idaho junior Mary Kamau (Kiambu, Kenya) won the Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award for the second straight week. She finished 10th in the “A” section of the 1,500 meter run at the Cardinal Invite. Her time of 4:22.37 was a season-best for Kamau and ranked first among collegiate finishers in her section. It also was the fastest time of all collegiate runners participating the 1,500m. Kamau’s mark also places her second on the Big West Best Marks list and 19th in the nation this year.

Women’s Trio Highlight Big West Field Athlete Of The Week Honors

Cal State Northridge junior Alex Marbley (Tustin, CA) earned Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors as he finished first in the high jump at the Cal Poly Five-Way meet. His leap of 7-03.00 tied the all-time school record in the high jump and moved him to the top of the Best Marks list in the Big West this season. He also ranks fifth nationally with that performance.

More winning performances abounded with a three-way tie for Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Cal Poly junior Kelly Dahl (Kingsburg, CA), Cal State Northridge sophomore Toni Smith (Denver, CO) and Long Beach State junior Samantha Young (Klamath Falls, OR) finished in first place in their respective events in competition last week.

Dahl won the pole vault at the Cal Poly Five-Way meet with a mark of 13-02.25, placing her second on the school’s all-time list. The mark also leads all Big West vaulters by more than a foot and qualified Dahl for NCAA Regionals.

Smith also excelled at the Cal Poly Five-Way meet with her win in the long jump. Smith posted a personal-best 20-10.50 mark to nail down the second-best performance in Cal State Northridge history. Her performance also ranks her first in the Big West and ninth overall in the nation.

Young exceeded her personal-best by nine inches with a winning throw of 158-10 in the javelin at the UC Irvine/Steve Scott Invitational. That established a Long Beach State school record and contined a trend of improvement for Young, who had a throw of 139-05 at the beginning of the year.
