Utah State's Smith, Cal State Northridge's Palacio Earn Big West Track Athlete Of The Week Honors
Utah State sophomore DJ Smith (Pleasanton, CA) earned Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors after notching a pair of victories at the Weber State Wildcat Twilight Invitational. The sprinter won the 100m dash in a time of 10.49, the second-fastest time in the Big West this season. Smith also ran to victory in the 200m dash in 21.26. That performance placed him fourth on the Big West Best Marks list.
Cal State Northridge senior Andrea Palacio (Fresno, CA) garnered Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolades after taking second place in the 1500 meters at the Occidental Invitational. She posted a personal-best time of 4:24.84. The time qualified her for NCAA Regionals and eclipsed her previous best of 4:25.82.
Idaho's Winger, Cal State Northridge's Crochet Selected Big West Field Athletes Of The Week
Idaho sophomore Russ Winger (Colorado Springs, CO) established personal records in two throwing events and was named Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The throw of 63-5.00 in the shot put at the Vandal Jamboree ranked first in the Big West, ninth in the nation and fourth all-time in Vandal history. Winger also heaved the discus 184-2, which placed him first in the Big West, 19th in the nation and fourth all-time in UI history. He won both events at the Vandal Jamboree.
Cal State Northridge redshirt freshman Tatiana Crochet (Beverly Hills, CA) took home Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors with a winning performance in the hammer at the Northridge Open. Her throw of 179-08 was a personal record and qualified her for NCAA Regionals. The mark also ranks her fifth in that event among Big West competitors.
