Long Beach State senior Shingo Suzumura (Nagoya, Japan) was named Big West Male Track Athlete of the Week. The 49er sprinter finished second in the 100-meter hurdles at the Long Beach Relays. His time of 14.58 qualified him for the Big West championships. UC Riverside junior Zikarra Beverly (San Diego, Calif.) was named Big West Female Track Athlete of the Week. The Highlander sprinter placed first in the 100-meter race in the All-Cal Cup and anchored the 4x100-meter relay that finished in first. Her time of 11.98 in the 100-m race broke UC Riverside's all-time record.
UC Santa Barbara sophomore Amy Haapanen (Manteca, Calif.) was named Big West Female Field Athlete of the Week. The Gaucho athlete took first place in the shot put (51-1.25) and hammer throw (185-2) at the All-Cal Cup. She also finishes second in the discus throw (162-10). Haapanen scored 28 points in the meet to lead the UCSB women to victory at the All-Cal Cup. All three of her marks were NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Long Beach State senior Doug Lefler (Frenchtown, Mont.) was named Big West Male Field Athlete of the Week after winning the shot put event and placing second on the discus throw at the Long Beach Relays. His marks in both events were good enough to qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
