The Big West held its annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meeting last week, July 16–17, in Orange County, Calif. Student-athletes from across the league gathered to share ideas and discuss key issues in college athletics and prepare for the 2026–27 academic year.
The two-day meeting opened with presentations from Credit Union 1 and Conscious Athletics focused on financial literacy and personal development for life after being a college student-athlete. Angie Allen, The Big West Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Student-Athlete Engagement, then reviewed the conference’s governance system and the current collegiate athletics landscape.
The group discussed several topics affecting today’s student-athletes, including eligibility, time demands, summer activities, transfer portal rules and potential NCAA legislative changes. Representatives offered honest feedback on balancing athletic development with academics and personal well-being.
On day two, SAAC members reviewed the Big West Championship experience and shared ideas for future participant gifts and event improvements. They also took part in a bylaw exercise, offering suggestions on equipment standards, officiating, replay procedures and competition operations.
Looking ahead, the group reviewed its 2026–27 leadership structure, which will include a chair and vice chair representing SAAC on The Big West Council. Members also discussed #BigWestCares initiatives such as youth clinics, food and clothing drives, hospital outreach, special-needs events and the continuation of the Head Strong helmet campaign.
“Our student-athletes continue to impress us with their willingness to lead and engage in meaningful conversations. We are incredibly proud of how they embrace these leadership opportunities, not only working to strengthen The Big West, but also contributing thoughtful perspectives that help shape the future of the NCAA. Their commitment to serving something bigger than themselves is what makes this group special,” said Allen.
The meeting concluded with representatives sharing successful ideas from their campus SAAC programs, including leadership workshops, attendance incentives, newsletters and cross-sport engagement.
With new ideas and connections in place, Big West SAAC enters the coming year ready to strengthen student-athlete voices and create a lasting impact across the conference.
