The Big West Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) met virtually in October to share campus perspectives on conference proposals, student-athlete well-being and community engagement ahead of The Big West Council meetings on Oct. 29–30.
Led by Angie Allen-Haldiman, Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Student-Athlete Engagement, and CSUN representative Marin Byars, the discussion centered on student-athlete time protections. Members emphasized the importance of consistent scheduling, adequate rest, and accountability, while recognizing the need for flexibility to accommodate varying travel demands and institutional needs.
Commissioner Dan Butterly shared updates on the Protect College Sports Act and NCAA governance. Representatives also discussed a proposed full-year competition model for men’s soccer, weighing the benefits of more recovery time between games against travel and operational challenges.
The group reviewed proposed changes to softball pregame procedures, softball and tennis championship formats, and SAAC representation on the Council’s Executive Committee. Members were encouraged to continue gathering campus feedback to help inform conference decisions.
“This is all fantastic feedback, and I’m so proud of you guys for having these conversations,” said Allen. “They’re not always the easiest.”
Members also received updates on Big West Undivided, the Head Strong helmet campaign, and NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum opportunities. Director of Communications Quentin Rodriguez encouraged representatives to share campus stories for conference features and Heritage Month coverage.
The meeting closed with highlights from California Baptist’s developing service project, Utah Valley’s mental health awareness event, and CSUN’s upcoming trunk-or-treat, reinforcing SAAC’s commitment to making an impact across the conference and in local communities.
