The Big West has announced a strategic expansion of its Olympic sport membership beginning with the 2027-28 season, strengthening several nationally prominent Olympic sports while enhancing competitive opportunities, postseason access and long-term sport sustainability.

As part of the expanded membership structure, the conference will welcome Air Force in men’s water polo, Fresno State in women’s water polo, Grand Canyon in beach volleyball, San Diego State in women’s water polo and San José State in beach volleyball and men’s and women’s water polo. UC Santa Barbara will also continue with The Big West in men’s volleyball and men’s and women’s track & field.

In addition, Hawai‘i will remain with The Big West in women’s water polo, beach volleyball and men’s volleyball, while UC San Diego will continue in men’s and women’s track & field, men’s volleyball and women’s water polo as part of the conference’s expanded Olympic sport membership.

“The Big West is proud to expand meaningful championship pathways for student-athletes while strengthening several sports in which our conference has established a strong national presence,” said Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly. “These institutions bring outstanding programs, competitive excellence and a shared commitment to the student-athlete experience. These additions enhance the depth and visibility of The Big West, support long-term sport sustainability, and position the conference for continued success on the national stage.”

The expanded membership reinforces The Big West’s strategic approach to sport sponsorship and membership alignment, while providing a premier competitive environment across several Olympic sport championships.

In total, The Big West will have 10 full member institutions in 2027-28, with eight additional institutions competing in at least one of the conference’s 19 sponsored sports.
