No. 5 Seed Cal State Fullerton Advances in 2026 Big West Baseball Championship Opener

IRVINE, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton secured a 5-1 victory over Hawai'i at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark, Wednesday night. The Titans' offense was highlighted by a late surge with two runs apiece in both the seventh and ninth innings and starting pitcher Mikiah Negrete threw a complete game of one run ball. 

With the win, Cal State Fullerton improves to 24-30 overall and advances in the bracket to take on top-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, May 21 at 1 p.m. PT. The Rainbow Warriors end their season with a 27-23 overall record. 

Cal State Fullerton's performance showcased contributions from several key players, including Negrete who delivered a complete game, striking out seven and allowing only one earned run over nine innings. Second baseman Nick Miller went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Designated hitter Paul Contreras had a team-high two RBI. Third baseman Esteban Olazaba made a significant impact with two hits and one run batted in, while also drawing two walks. 

On the mound, Hawai'i righty Isaiah Magdaleno pitched 6.1 innings, striking out four batters and allowed two earned runs. Outfielder Kamana Nahaku went a perfect 2-for-4 from the plate. 

The Rainbow Warriors scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI groundout from Evan Rolbiecki. The Titans evened the score at 1-1 with a single from Contreras that plated Miller. 

Cal State Fullerton took the lead in the top of the seventh inning with a squeeze play as Olazaba laid down a bunt that brought home Cam Burdick from third. A wild pitch scored Miller as the Titans put two runs on the board in the inning for a 3-1 edge. 

Cal State Fullerton got two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. The first one came on an RBI fielder's choice from Contreras and the second on a squeeze bunt from Andrew Kirchner to account for the final score of the game.
