Cal Poly shortstop Nate Castellon slashed .556/.556/.833 with six hits, five walks, five RBI and three runs scored in four games to win The Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award. It is Castellon's first career weekly honor from the conference. The freshman started the week by hitting a three-run home run in a mid-week matchup at Santa Clara, Tuesday night. Castellon went 3-for-4 with one run as the Mustangs defeated Cal State Bakersfield 4-1 in the series opener on Friday. The Woodland Hills, Calif. product was 4-for-5 from the plate with two RBI and one run as Cal Poly prevailed 9-5 in game two, Saturday. On Sunday, Castellon hit 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run as the Mustangs prevailed 12-6 and completed the sweep of the Roadrunners. Cal Poly 31-15 overall and in second place in the league standings with a 18-6 record. Castellon is hitting .358 with 39 RBI and 29 runs. Also Nominated: J.C. Pitcher of the Week Matthew O'Brien, UC Riverside | Junior • Left-Handed Pitcher • Simi Valley, Calif. UC Riverside pitcher Matthew O'Brien pitched two games, once in relief and once as a starter, and gave up only one run to earn The Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week award. It is O'Brien's first career weekly honor. In a Tuesday matchup against California Baptist, the Simi Valley, Calif. native threw 2.1 innings of relief, giving up no runs and no walks, while allowing only three hits as the Highlanders won 6-4. O'Brien pitched 7.1 innings against CSUN with nine strikeouts, giving up only one run as UC Riverside prevailed 3-1, Saturday. The Highlander lefty gave up one run in the first and put up zeroes the rest of the way. O'Brien is 4-4 on the year, throwing 52.2 innings in 18 appearances.
