Gauchos Cap Season in First Round of NCAA Championship

Berkeley, Calif. -- Big West regular-season champion and 35th-ranked UC Santa Barbara fell 4-0 to No. 16 UCLA by a score of 4-0 in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship, Friday at Cal’s Hellman Tennix Complex.

The Gauchos conclude their season with an 18-5 overall record.

UCLA (17-8) won the doubles point by a narrow margin with two courts coming down to tiebreakers. Alexander Hoogmartens and Giacomo Revelli (UCLA) defeated Gianluca Brunkow and Lucca Liu (UCSB) 6-4 at the top of the lineup. At position No. 3, Diogo Morais and Charlie Underwood (UCSB) prevailed 7-6 (7-5) over Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels (UCLA) to even the doubles battle. In the middle court, Spencer Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi (UCLA) defeated Conrad Brown and Dominique Rolland (UCSB) 7-6 (7-2) to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the team score.

UCLA took three straight set victories to secure the team victory. Kaylan Bigun took down Liu 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot. Johnson topped Underwood 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Revelli bested Matei Gavrea 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.

Although it was a UCLA sweep on the scoreboard, the dual match was closer than it appeared. The Bruins won the doubles point in tiebreakers and in singles, UC Santa Barbara was leading on all of the matches that went unfinished.
