Cal State Fullerton Sees Seven Stroke Improvement in Round 2 of 2025 NCAA Women's Golf Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Big West champion Cal State Fullerton saw a seven-stroke improvement in the second day of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships but couldn’t gain any ground on the leaderboard on a cloudy Saturday from Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

Junior Davina Xanh led the team on the day with a 2-over 74, recording back-to-back birdies on the first two holes of the round to open the day. The junior duo of Kathi Zeilinger and Big West individual medalist Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith fired off rounds of 3-over 75. Junior Louise Dahl’s 5-over 77 as the final countable round for the Titans on the day.

Zermeno Smith also saw a string of back-to-back birdies with red numbers on Nos. 5 and 6, using powerful drives and accurate second shots en route to the birdie opportunities. Zermeno Smith’s two-round tally of 4-over 148 is good for a tie for 53rd individually.

Coupled with today’s team score of 13-over 301, the Titans have a two-round total of 609 (+33), two strokes ahead of UNLV and one stroke back from Georgia Southern in 29th place.

Cal State Fullerton’s third round of the historic NCAA Championships appearance is slated to start on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. beginning from hole No. 1. Thir third round playing partners will be Georgia Southern (+32) and UNLV (+35).

Cal State Fullerton is guaranteed 54 holes of golf and can extend to 72 by making a climb into the top 15 teams by the end of Sunday’s. The top nine individuals not on a team making the cut will also compete in Monday’s stroke play finale to crown an individual champion before Tuesday and Wednesday see the top eight teams compete in match play for the title.

Using the best round of the day at a combined 10-under, Stanford lept up 10 spots to take the lead in the team standings. Mississippi State's Avery Weed was one of three players to finish Satureday's round at 4-under 68, and added to a first-round 3-under 69, Weed holds a two-stroke lead in the race to the individual title.
