The Big West Gears Up for Spring Women's Golf Season

It’s almost time to swing away in the spring as Big West women’s golf squads are set to take to the course at the end of January. Here are some top stories to note heading into the spring:
  • One Big West team is under the direction of a new coach, as UC Davis elevated Ameila Hicks to interim head coach over the summer. Hicks has already guided the squad to the conference’s highest team ranking and a tournament title during the fall.
  • Two Big West teams are in the Top 50 in the country following impressive fall performances. UC Davis enters the spring as The Big West’s highest ranked team, coming in at No. 41 nationally and 11th in the West, with Long Beach State checking in at 50th. Cal Poly (No. 72), Cal State Fullerton (No. 79), UC Irvine (No. 88) join them in the Top 100 of the Clippd rankings.
  • The Aggies were on fire at the Colonel Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Sept. 23-24, cruising to a 11-stroke victory with senior Abby Leighton tying for first individually and freshman Elina Kuang posting a UC Davis record low with an 8-under 64 in the first round of the Classic. Other team event wins in the fall were on tap for UC Irvine (Wolverine Invitational), Long Beach State (Dick McGuire Invitational) and Cal State Fullerton (Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational).
  • Individually, the Titans’ Davina Xanh lands at No. 54 nationally to lead the league. The junior from Weston Super Mare, England, secured both Big West Player of the Month awards in the fall, recording three finishes in the top three individually and one team win. Back-to-back Big West individual medalist and 2024 NCAA Championship participant Jasmine Leovao of Long Beach State (No. 76), UC Davis’ Leighton (No. 80) also enjoyed successful falls to break into the Top 100 rankings.
  • Teams restart their season in a few short weeks with Cal State Fullerton first to tee off in a dual match against Cal Baptist on Jan. 27. Tournament play resumes around the league to open the month of February with an action-packed schedule to lead up to the postseason. Multiple Big West squads play host in the spring with UC Riverside, Long Beach State, UC Davis and Hawai’i each putting on an event
  • The 2025 Big West Women’s Golf Championship returns to Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas for a third consecutive season, from April 13-15. Last year, Long Beach State secured a wire-to-wire team win, besting three-time defending champion Cal Poly by 23 strokes with the largest margin of victory since 2015. Leovao took home individual honors and is just the sixth individual repeat victor in Championship history.
