UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara Stave Off Elimination from NCAA Baseball Regionals

CORVALLIS, Ore. --
UC Irvine scored in seven out of nine innings to defeat Tulane by a score of 17-7 in an elimination game in the Corvallis Regional of the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, Sunday at Oregon State’s Goss Stadium. The 17 Anteater runs are the most a team has scored so far in this tournament. It is also the third most runs for an NCAA Tournament game in UCI program history.

UC Irvine improves to 45-13 overall and advances to the regional final to take on national 15th seed and regional host Oregon State on Sunday, June 2 at 6 p.m. PT.The Green Wave conclude their season with a 36-26 record.

The Anteaters scored one run in each of the first two innings thanks to RBIs from Anthony Martinez and Abraham Garcia-Pacheco. With a 2-2 stalemate after two innings, UCI scored two in the third on Dub Gleed and Chase Call's RBI hits to take the lead that it would not relinquish.

Caden Kendle and Woody Hadeen brought runners home in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, as the Anteaters increased their lead by four. After the Green Wave got a score in the bottom of the sixth, the Anteaters responded in a big way with nine runs in the seventh and added two more in the ninth to put the game away. Tulane did bring in four runners in the ninth, but the margin was insurmountable as UC Irvine prevailed by 10.

The Anteaters drew six hit by pitches in the game, increasing their NCAA single-season record to 172. UC Irvine recorded 15 hits, three from Garcia-Pacheco, two each from Kendle, Martinez and Jo Oyama and one apiece from Hadeen, Gleed, Call, Myles Smith, Luke Spillane and Will Bermudez.
Anteater starter Danny Suarez threw the first 2.2 innings and gave up two runs, both unearened and struck out five. Ricky Ojeda tossed the next 3.1 innings and got the win, giving up one run with three strikeouts in the process. David Vizcaino threw the final 3.0 frames and got the save. 
UC Santa Barbara 4, San Diego 2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Santa Barbara hit two home runs and got stellar pitching to defeat San Diego by score of 4-2 in an elimination game in the Santa Barbara Regional of the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.The Gauchos are the national 14th seed and hosts of the regional.

UCSB improves to 44-13 overall and advance to the regional final against Oregon on Sunday, June 2 at 6 p.m. The Toreros’ season ends with a 41-15 record.

Jonah Sebring and Ivan Brethowr hit 2-run homers in the second and third, respectively, to put UCSB up 4-0 after three innings. The Gaucho pitching made sure the four runs were enough as starter Mike Gutierrez threw 6.0 innings of two-run ball with four strikeouts to earn the win. Gutierrez remains unbeaten (10-0) on the season. Jackson Flora and Cole Tryba combined for the final three innings and did not allow a run. Brethowr, Jonathan Mendez and LeTrey McCollum each had multi-hit games. Sebring, Aaron Parker and Nick Oalkey had one hit apiece.
