IRVINE, Calif. - The All-Big West men's tennis teams and major award winners have been announced, following the conclusion of the 2024 Big West Men's Tennis Championship. The teams and awards were voted on by the league's seven head coaches.
UC Santa Barbara senior Pablo Masjuan is The Big West Player of the Year. Masjuan 13-6 in singles play at the No. 1 position with 4-2 mark in league play. The Madrid, Spain product helped guide the Gauchos to a 2024 Big West regular season crown and also made way on the first team all doubles list with partner Gianluca Brunkow. The duo went 4-0 at the top-flight and bested their Big West opposition, 2-0. The Gaucho duo is ranked 40th in the nation. Masjuan will be a participant in both singles and doubles, with Brunkow, in the upcoming NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
Andy Nguyen is The Big West Freshman of the Year. The Anteater rookie accumulated an 18-5 record with undefeated performances at No. 2 (1-0), and No. 3 (2-0) this season while going 5-2 and 4-1 at spots five and six, respectively. In Big West action, Nguyen went 3-0.
UC Irvine head coach Mike Saunders is The Big West Coach of the Year. Saunders led the 'Eaters to a 17-6 record while only suffering a lone setback (5-1) in Big West action this season. UC Irvine took home The Big West Men's Tennis Championship as the No. 2 seed, with a 4-1 victory versus No. 3 Cal Poly in the semifinals and another 4-1 triumph over the top seeded Guachos in the title match. The Anteaters will represent The Big West in the upcoming NCAA Men's Tennis Championship when UCI takes the trip to No. 4 TCU on Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m. PT.
Singles players on the All-Big West First Team showcase Masjuan, Brunkow, Cal Poly's Noah Berry (5-13, 1-4 BW) Constantinos Djakouris of UC Davis (9-4, 2-0 BW), Cal Poly's Joe Leather (7-7, 3-0 BW), UC Irvine's Enrique Luque Rico (16-7, 3-1 BW) and Hiroki Sakagawa (18-9, 2-2 BW).
The doubles pairing on the All-Big West first team features UC Santa Barbara's Brunkow and Masjuan, UC Irvine's Rahul Dhokia and Noah Zamora (7-6, 3-1 BW), Ivan Savkin and Ryan Torres (11-1, 4-0 BW), and Cal Poly's Colter Smith and Bastiaan Westrate (9-8, 3-2 BW).
The All-Big West second team sees Rithvik Krishna of UC Irvine (18-9, 3-1 BW), Carson Lee of UC San Diego (9-10, 0-1 BW), Luka Mrsic of UC Santa Barbara (7-8, 1-3 BW), Quinn Synder of Hawai'i (8-6, 3-2 BW), Ryan Torres of UC Davis (9-7, 5-0 BW) and Noah Zamora of UC Irvine (15-4, 5-0 BW) round out the list of singles honors.
Second team doubles include Kai Brady and Lucca Lui (5-10, 1-1 BW), Andy Hernandez and Quinn Synder (3-3, 0-2 BW), Andy Nguyen and Hiroki Sakagawa of UC Irvine (10-9, 1-3) and Pelayo Rodriguez and Zach Pellouchoud of UC San Diego (11-8, 1-0 BW).
