Efforts in Weekend Sweeps Give Long Beach State's Patton and CSUN's Fitzer Weekly Awards

    Long Beach State starting pitcher Myles Patton threw seven shutout innings against Cal State Fullerton to claim The Big West Pitcher of the Week award. It is Patton's first career weekly honor and the second time this season that a Dirtbag pitcher has earned the accolade after Kellan Montgomery won the award on Feb. 26. 
  • In an eventual 5-2 team victory in game one of the series, the lefty limited the Titans to five hits, struck out seven, and did not walk a batter. The sophomore threw 99 pitches, 71 for them for strikes.

  • The Dirtbags won the next two games by scores of 4-3 and 9-6 to complete the series sweep of Cal State Fullerton. 

  • Long Beach State is currently 13-8-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Patton is 2-2 with a 3.37 ERA and has recorded 48 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work this season.

Field Player of the Week
Kevin Fitzer, CSUN | Junior • Outfielder • Aliso Viejo, Calif. 
  • 8012Kevin Fitzer slashed .529/.619/1.000 with seven RBI and five runs, and led CSUN to a 4-0 week, to earn The Big West Field Player of the Week honor. It is the first career weekly award for Fitzer.

  • The junior started the week by belting a three-run homer to break open a one-run game in an 8-4 win over Pepperdine on Tuesday. 

  • In game one of the series against UC Riverside, Fitzer hit 4-for-4, coming a homer shy of cycle, while tripling twice and doubling once in an 8-4 win on Friday. 

  • The Aliso Viejo, Calif. product went 4-for-6 in game two of the series on Saturday, including hitting the go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the ninth to lift CSUN to a wild 15-13 win. 

  • The Matador outfielder reached base in all four games on the week (13 times total). 

  • CSUN is 14-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Fitzer has now reached base safely in 20 consecutive games and is currently batting a team-best .363 with 21 RBI, 20 runs and five home runs on the season.
