The 2024-25 Dennis Farrell Big West Commissioner's Cup fall standings are here, and reigning Cup winner Cal Poly holds the slight advantage after the fall competition.
First awarded after the 1998-99 season, The Big West Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the athletic department who has the best overall performance across all Big West conference-sponsored sports.
Through the fall, the Mustangs have compiled a five-sport average of 192.0 points to land on the top line of the standings. Both cross country programs earned maximum points after capturing The Big West titles to open up the month of November. Men's soccer and women's volleyball also claimed regular-season titles to top the points listings with title-earning seasons in four out of the five fall sports which Cal Poly competes.
Second place goes to Hawai'i, who participates in three women's sports during the fall competitive season. The Rainbow Wahine claimed the regular-season crown in women's soccer and tied for second in the women's volleyball standings before going on to win The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2024 Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship. UH took fifth in women's cross country to average 190.0 Cup points, just two points back from Cal Poly.
Third place in the standings with 160.0 points is UC Davis as the Aggies recorded runner-up finishes in the women's cross country Championship and the women's soccer and women's volleyball regular seasons. Men's soccer tied for third in Cup points before claiming the Championship trophy and competing in the national postseason.
Men's water polo regular-season champion UC Irvine stands in fourth at 143.3 points with UC Santa Barbara sitting in fifth at 108.3 points. The Anteaters recorded a third-place finish in women's cross country to go along with Big West postseason opportunities in women's volleyball and women's soccer. For UC Santa Barbara, a second-place showing in men's soccer and a tie for third-place points in women's soccer bumped the Gauchos up the listings. Both of UCSB's soccer squads enjoyed trips to the NCAA Championship after the women took home The Big West title and the men earned an at-large entry and advancing to the second round of play before a departure from the bracket after falling in penalty kicks.
Eligible to compete for Big West Championships in all sports after completing their four-year reclassification to Division I, UC San Diego finds themselves in sixth at 98.3 points propelled by top-five finishes in both men's and women's cross country and women's volleyball.
Seventh belongs to Cal State Bakersfield (92.5), followed closely by Long Beach State (90.0). Cal State Fullerton (80.0), UC Riverside (66.0) and CSUN (48.0) round out the standings following the completion of six of the 21 Big West conference-sponsored sports.
Five departments have claimed the Commissioner's Cup since its inception 26 years ago. Cal Poly's Cup win in 2023-24 was their first in program history. UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State each have 10, with Long Beach State claiming two. Cal State Fullerton has hoisted the trophy once and former member Pacific earned the first two Commissioner's Cups. Two Cups were not awarded, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In determining a victor for the Dennis Farrell Big West Commissioner's Cup, points are awarded based on either regular-season finish or Big West postseason results in all 21 conference-sponsored sports, and the member-institution with the highest average point total is declared the winner.
Regular-season finish determines the designated point tallies in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor volleyball and water polo. In the sports of cross country, golf, track & field, women's beach volleyball and swimming and diving, the points are awarded based on finish at each respective Big West Championship. In the case of ties in all sports, points are awarded by combining points and dividing them equally among the tied teams.
