Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes and honors Hispanic and Latino Americans' contributions, culture, and history.
This celebration begins on September 15, a date that marks the independence of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Throughout the month, various events, educational programs, and cultural celebrations highlight the rich traditions, artistic expressions, and achievements of Hispanic communities. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the diverse influences that shape American society and to promote understanding and appreciation of the vibrant Hispanic heritage.
Here at The Big West, we proudly boast the significant contributions of our Hispanic/Latino student-athletes across all of our institutions. They not only excel in their respective sports but also represent a growing segment of the NCAA community, with a remarkable 70% increase in participation over the past decade.
In the latest 2023 Division I Graduation Success Rates data, Hispanic/Latino student-athletes continued to excel academically. In the 2023 Four-Cohort Division I Graduation Success Rates, Hispanic/Latino student-athletes came in at 88%, an increase of 24 percentage points from the first year of GSR data in 2002 and 9 percentage points since 2013.

During this month, member institutions engage in various initiatives, including special events, educational programs, and community outreach, aimed at fostering awareness and appreciation of Hispanic culture.
