- True freshman first baseman Anthony Martinez led UC Irvine to a 2-2 road record in garnering a second Big West Field Player of the Week honor.
- Martinez homered three times and drove in multiple runs in all four contests to total 11 RBI. The left-hander batted .611 (11-for-18) and slugged 1.167 with five runs, a double, one hit-by-pitch, a .571 on-base percentage, a 1.738 OPS, and just two strikeouts.
- Martinez put together a pair of four-hit, three-RBI efforts in 10-2 Anteater wins, at the University of San Diego on Tuesday night and in Saturday’s middle contest at CSUN, and now has two streaks this season of at least three straight games with a long ball.
- The product of Fairfield and 2022 graduate of De La Salle High School in Concord handled all 42 chances (two assists) cleanly on defense and was part of eight double plays.
- Martinez is a leading candidate for the upcoming Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year announcement, pacing the conference in several offensive categories like batting average (.408), on-base percentage (.479), OPS (1.141), hits (82) and RBI (54).
- Martinez is the 2023 season’s first two-time Big West Field Player of the Week, having earned an initial selection back on March 6, which also came with a D1Baseball National Player of the Week nod.

- Nico Zeglin twirled a three-hit shutout against second-place defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara at Blair Field on Friday night for a second Big West Pitcher of the Week recognition.
- Zeglin engaged in a pitcher’s duel with Gaucho sophomore right-hander Matt Ager (7.1 IP), the two of them notching 10 strikeouts apiece in the 1-0 LBSU triumph. The graduate student retired the final 20 UCSB hitters in order following a one-out double and walk in the third.
- The 9.0 innings are a new career long for Zeglin (7-4), with the 10 strikeouts marking a fourth double-digit punch-out performance as a Dirtbag. Zeglin walked two and faced three batters over the minimum, needing only 99 pitches (62 strikes) to do it. In the first inning, Zeglin fired to second baseman Eddie Saldivar to pick Jared Sundstrom off of second following a one-out double, just ahead of another double by Aaron Parker as the Gauchos failed to score.
- The first-year transfer from Gonzaga has now been a part of three shutouts in 2023, having earned a first Big West weekly award on March 13 after combining on a two-hit, 8-0 shutout (7.0 IP, 0 H, BB, career-high 13 K) against visiting South Florida the day before.
- Zeglin’s current ERA is 2.21, with the Walnut Creek product also second in The Big West in both innings (81.1) and strikeouts (104) behind Ager (84.0 IP, 105 K).
- LBSU leads the league with four Big West Pitcher of the Week awards in 2023, as Zeglin and fellow newcomer Graham Osman (Feb. 20 and April 3) have two apiece, joined by Ager.
