INDIANAPOLIS -- UC Santa Barbara will play San Diego in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship, hosted at USC’s David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The date of the match will be either on Friday, May 5 or Saturday May 6.
The announcement was made Monday on the NCAA Men’s Tennis Selection Show on NCAA.com. It is the 16th appearance in the national tournament for the UCSB program.
The Gauchos (22-3) punched their ticket to the national tournament by
winning the 2023 Big West Men’s Tennis Championship to earn the conference’s automatic qualifier. UCSB is ranked No. 30 in the latest ITA rankings (April 25) and won a share of The Big West’s regular season title. San Diego is ranked No. 30 with a 17-7 record.
The victorious team will play the winner of USC (19-7) vs. Idaho (15-8) on Saturday, May 6 or Sunday, May 7. The round of 16 and on will be held at USTA National Campus from May 11-27.
In 2021, the Gauchos fell to Pepperdine 4-1 in the opening round, which was also played at USC. The furthest UCSB has gotten in the is the round of 16 in 1997.
