Triton Tandem Brandon Larson and Izaak Martinez Secure Weekly Honors After Fourth Big West Series Sweep of the Season

  • UC San Diego freshman Brandon Larson collected 10 RBI and scored five runs to help lead the Tritons to a sweep at Cal Poly and earn a first career Big West Field Player of the Week nod. Larson is the second UCSD slugger to earn an award this year, joining Michael Fuhrman in gaining distinction (March 20).

  • Larson knocked a home run in each of the Tritons’ four games for the week, including a 3-2 loss at USC on Tuesday. Larson recorded a 1.125 slugging percentage, going 6-for-16 with three walks and a .474 on-base percentage.

  • The Tritons’ designated hitter drove in three runs in each of UC San Diego’s three games against the Mustangs to secure the series sweep. Larson blasted the go-ahead home runs in both Saturday and Sunday’s victories at Cal Poly.

  • Larson’s 10 runs batted in moved him into a tie for second place in The Big West with 42 RBI on the season.

  • This marks the first time in program history a pair of UC San Diego baseball players has swept The Big West weekly awards. The Tritons began their reclassification period to Division I and joined the league in July 2020.

  • UC San Diego left-hander Izaak Martinez secured a save in each contest of the weekend to earn a first career Big West Pitcher of the Week award. Martinez is the first UCSD pitcher to garner weekly honors this season.

  • In three appearances at Cal Poly, Martinez combined to go 4.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts as the Tritons swept the Mustangs.

  • The redshirt junior recorded a three-inning save in the series opener on Friday, facing one batter over the minimum and collecting five strikeouts. On Saturday, Martinez took care of the final out in the ninth to shut down a late Cal Poly comeback, 8-6.

  • After allowing a leadoff home run in the ninth on Sunday—his only run allowed of the weekend—Martinez retired the next three Mustangs in order, including a swinging strikeout to end the contest, 7-6.

  • Martinez is now tied for fifth in The Big West with four saves on the season, and is tied for second in total wins with a record of 5-1.
