Juniors Jonathon Long and Graham Osman of In-Form Long Beach State Take Big West Baseball Weekly Honors

Jonathon Long, Long Beach State
Baseball Field Player of the Week
Junior • First Base • Orange, Calif.

  • Jonathon Long batted .444 (8-for-18) and slugged 1.167 with four runs, one double, four home runs, six RBI and two walks (one intentional) to lead Long Beach State to a 4-0 week at home, including a sweep over conference rival Cal Poly, for a second career Big West Field Player of the Week award.
  • Two of Long’s blasts were of the walk-off variety, as the true junior first baseman produced solo efforts to lead off the ninth inning against California Baptist on Tuesday night for a 3-2 triumph, and again in the ninth with two gone in Saturday’s middle contest with the Mustangs for a 5-4 decision.
  • Defensively, Long started all four games at first base and handled all 29 chances cleanly with two assists and two double plays.
  • Long’s previous Big West Field Player of the Week selection came to open the 2022 campaign on Feb. 21. The Orange product and teammate Kyle Ashworth have now gone back-to-back this season.
  • Earlier Monday, Long was recognized as one of seven (four field players) Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week, powered by Diamond Sports, becoming The Big West’s first recipient of that distinction for 2023.

Also Nominated: Dallas Duarte (Hawai’i); Alex Gouveia (UC Davis); Jacob Gutierrez (CSU Bakersfield); Christian Kirtley (UC Santa Barbara); Brandon Larson (UC San Diego); Jakob Simons (CSUN); Carter White (Cal State Fullerton)

Graham Osman, Long Beach State
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Redshirt Junior • Left-Handed Pitcher • Morrison, Colo.
30968
  • Graham Osman threw 6.0 shutout frames in a 10-2 Long Beach State victory over Cal Poly on Friday night on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field to become the first two-time Big West Pitcher of the Week for 2023.
  • The fourth-year junior southpaw and first-year Arizona State transfer scattered six singles, one walk and a hit-by-pitch while striking out nine Mustangs (seven looking and at least one in each inning) in the 87-pitch performance. Osman’s win-loss record improved to 4-0, with league-leading totals of a 1.54 ERA and .182 opponent batting average.
  • Osman collected three called strikes around a one-out single in the first inning, and worked around a single and hit-by-pitch to lead off the second, getting a fourth strikeout looking and a flyout with Cal Poly runners at second and third after handling a sacrifice bunt.
  • With the bases suddenly full with no outs through three singles on four pitches in the third, Osman preserved a narrow 1-0 Dirtbag edge thanks to a fifth called third strike and an around-the-horn double play.
  • Osman set down 11 of the last 13 Cal Poly batters faced, with just a two-out infield single in the fourth and a leadoff walk in the fifth.
  • Osman’s LBSU debut in the team’s season opener back on Feb. 17, a combined shutout (7.0 IP, H, BB, 8 K) also at home over Wichita State, had netted the product of Morrison, Colo., that first Big West Pitcher of the Week award on Feb. 20. Teammate and fellow newcomer Nico Zeglin was the March 13 selection.
Also Nominated: Hudson Barrett (UC Santa Barbara); Harrison Bodendorf (Hawai’i); Lucas Braun (CSUN); Jacob Gutierrez (CSU Bakersfield); Jojo Ingrassia (Cal State Fullerton); Ryan Rissas (UC San Diego)
