Sweeping Sophomores Ashworth of Long Beach State and Hawai’i Southpaw Gustin Earn Big West Baseball Weekly Accolades

Kyle Ashworth, Long Beach State
Baseball Field Player of the Week
Sophomore • Centerfielder • Santa Ana, Calif.

  • Kyle Ashworth slashed .533/.588/.800 in leading Long Beach State to a perfect 4-0 week and garnering a first career Big West Field Player of the Week distinction.
  • The sophomore who played at Santa Ana College in 2022 went 8-for-15 and scored a team-high seven runs to go along with six RBI, a double, one home run, two walks and a stolen base on one attempt. Ashworth had at least one run and one hit in all four contests, producing a trio of multiple-hit efforts.
  • To round out the Dirtbags’ weekend road sweep at UC Riverside, Ashworth was 3-for-5 (season high for hits) with a three-run home run (first for LBSU), two runs and a season-best four RBI. The week began with a season-high three runs (2-for-3, one walk) during Wednesday night’s 10-6 home win over Fresno State, breaking an 0-for-11 stretch.
  • Defensively, Ashworth started all four games in center field and made eight clean putouts without an error. The graduate of Foothill High School struck out just once.
  • Ashworth is LBSU’s first Big West Field Player of the Week of 2023, with Graham Osman (Feb. 20) and Nico Zeglin (March 13) having gained pitcher awards, and is the program’s first field recipient since current teammate Rocco Peppi for last year’s final week on May 30.

Also Nominated: Kyson Donahue (Hawai’i); Kevin Fitzer (CSUN); Matt Halbach (UC San Diego); Nate Nankil (Cal State Fullerton); Jacob Shanks (UC Riverside); Jared Sundstrom (UC Santa Barbara); Mark Wolbert (UC Davis)

Harry Gustin, Hawai'i
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Sophomore • Left-Handed Pitcher • Aurora, Colo.

  • Harry Gustin fired 7.0 one-hit frames in igniting Hawai’i to the sweep of a three-game non-conference series at home over Tulane and picking up a first career Big West Pitcher of the Week award.
  • Gustin in fact took a no-hitter into the seventh as the Rainbow Warriors scored three in the sixth for a 3-1 triumph over Tulane in Friday night’s opener at Les Murakami Stadium. The sophomore out of Aurora, Colo., struck out a career-high eight while facing just two batters over the minimum in the solid 96-pitch outing. It was the longest stint of both Gustin’s college career, and of any UH hurler thus far in 2023.
  • The lone blemishes against Gustin were a two-out walk in the third after retiring the first eight hitters in order, and then after 10 more in a row were set down, a pinch-hit home run to lead off the seventh. The left-hander struck out the next three to round out the performance. Gustin had also gotten a called third strike to end the third after that walk.
  • The Rainbow Warriors as a staff surrendered just three runs to the Green Wave in posting a second straight series victory and a first weekend sweep for the current campaign.
  • Gustin is the first Hawai’i baseball student-athlete to earn a Big West weekly award this season, and indeed first of second-year head coach Rich Hill’s tenure on O’ahu. Three Rainbow Warriors, Kole Kaler (April 12), Stone Miyao (April 26) and Dustin Demeter (May 3), were named Big West Field Player of the Week in 2021. UH’s last Big West Pitcher of the Week was Logan Pouelsen all the way back on March 5, 2019.
Also Nominated: Hudson Barrett (UC Santa Barbara); Ryan Baum (Cal Poly); Carter Delaney (UC Davis); Jojo Ingrassia (Cal State Fullerton); Izaak Martinez (UC San Diego); Xavier Martinez (CSUN); Graham Osman (Long Beach State)
