Hutchison, Schafer Earn NCAA Division I Ping All-Region Honors

NORMAN, Okla. — The Big West is represented by two men on the NCAA Division I PING All-Region lists, recently announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Broken into six regions, UC Davis senior Thomas Hutchison and Long Beach State senior Tyler Schaffer both earned nods as All-West Region selections.

Hutchison closed his final collegiate campaign with gusto, earning his second career honor as Big West Golfer of the Year after putting together an individual medalist performance at The Big West Championships to lead the Aggies into the NCAA Regional field.

Hutchison boasted eight top-10s this season, including three individual tournament victories. The senior from San Jose, Calif., fired 18 rounds in the 60s, highlighted by a school-record 62 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational this past fall. He capped the year averaging 69.69 strokes per round and listed 29th in the last Golfstat individual rankings.

Joining Hutchison on the All-Region squad is Long Beach State’s Schafer. Playing for his hometown team, the senior earned his spot as an individual qualifier into the NCAA Regional field after posting four top-10s on the year, including two seventh-place showings in the final two regular-season events. He closed the year with a 71.71 adjusted stroke average.

Schafer was the top Big West finisher in the national postseason, taking 14th individually and just two strokes out from the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship site. This is Schafer’s first All-Region selection, following the footsteps of fellow Beach golfer Hunter Epson who was a 2021 honoree. For Hutchison, the award is the second in his career after also claiming All-Region distinction in 2019.
