IRVINE, Calif. (April 19, 2022) – After coming up clutch in the 2022 Big West Women’s Golf Championships, Cal Poly freshman Kaylyn Noh headlines the selections for the 2022 All-Big West Women’s Golf Team.
Noh, a first-year collegian from Rocklin, Calif., was named Golfer and Freshman of the Year, along with landing on the All-Big West First Team. Last week at San Luis Obispo Country Club, she rallied to claim the individual title at the 2022 Big West Women’s Golf Championships after overtaking 36-hole leader Kate Villegas in the final 18. With the pair tied after the eighth hole, Noh carded her first birdie of the round to head into the turn with a one stroke lead. She added three more birdies on the back nine to close with a three-day tally of 216 to complete the three-stroke win in comeback fashion.
Along with her individual hardware, Noh helped the Mustangs earn the team trophy as co-champions with Hawai’i as the two finished off with a 903 team score. Noh was instrumental in the rally to consecutive championships, as Cal Poly entered the final round down five strokes. Noh’s four birdies, including two in the last four holes of regulation as the final group in the course secured the tie.
Then, in the team playoff to determine the Big West’s automatic qualifier, Noh went out as the last Cal Poly golfer in the lineup. The results were all but decided heading into the final pairing, but Noh punctuated the playoff by rolling in her birdie try to send the Mustangs into the NCAA Regional field.
Cal Poly head coach Sofie Aagaard repeats as Big West Coach of the Year, earning her second consecutive distinction, and the fourth of her career guiding the Mustangs.
Noh is joined on the first team by Cal Poly teammate and fifth-year senior Caroline Cantlay, who placed third in the championships to earn her second straight place on the Big West All-Tournament team. This is Cantlay’s fourth appearance on an All-Big West team, also landing on the first team in 2019.
UC Riverside sees a pair on the All-Big West first team with Championships individual runner-up Villegas and freshman Tiffany Le landing on the top squad. Villegas was a second-team selection in 2021’s freshman campaign. Hawai’i first-year player Momo Sugiyama and UC Davis freshman Abby Leighton round out the youthful six-woman first team. Sugiyama posted a Big West-best eight top-10 finishes on the season, including an individual victory in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, in the fall.
The second team sees a pair from the Big West co-champion Rainbow Wahine in Hyeongi Kang and Hana Mirnik, with Cal Poly’s Elizabeth Scholtes earning distinction as both conference-topping teams placed three women on the All-Big West listings. Long Beach State sophomore Hannah Ko and senior Angela Bagasbas of UC Irvine round out the distinctions.
