Cal State Fullerton’s Lyon, CSUN’s Traxel Pick Up First Career Weekly Honors After Keying Series Sweeps

Jackson Lyon, Cal State Fullerton
Baseball Field Player of the Week
Junior • Outfielder • Irvine, Calif.

29018

  • Jackson Lyon aided Cal State Fullerton to a home series sweep over UC Davis, hitting .667 in going 8-for-12 with five runs, two doubles, one triple, one home run and four RBI. The fourth-year junior slugged 1.250 with a .733 on-base percentage and three walks against zero strikeouts. Lyon made four clean outfield putouts defensively.
  • Lyon’s weekend was highlighted by an opposite-field, walk-off triple in Friday night’s come-from-behind 4-3 triumph. The Irvine native out of Woodbridge High School produced multiple hits in all three contests, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort in Saturday’s finale with a walk, three runs and two RBI.
  • Saturday marked Lyon’s second four-hit, three-run game in the last eight. They were the first four-hit performances of his college career. Thursday’s contest was his first with two doubles, with his first triple and fourth home run of the year coming the following day.
  • Lyon improved his season batting average to a team-leading .387. In fact his entire slash line of .387/.456/.595 tops the Titans and are career bests. He also shares team highs with 43 hits and nine doubles.
  • Lyon is a first-time Big West Field Player of the Week for his career, and is the first Titan to be so recognized thus far in 2022. He is Cal State Fullerton’s first field selection since current teammate Zach Lew was chosen to begin the 2020 campaign.

Also nominated: Aaron Casillas (CSU Bakersfield), Dallas Duarte (Hawai’i), Broc Mortensen (UC Santa Barbara), Jalen Smith (UC San Diego), Andrew Sojka (CSUN), Mark Wolbert (UC Davis)

Blaine Traxel, CSUN
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Senior • RHP • Burbank, Calif.

29019

  • CSUN senior right-hander Blaine Traxel twirled a nine-inning complete-game shutout in Thursday night’s 6-0 victory at UC Riverside. It was a six-hitter, all singles, with eight strikeouts falling one shy of Traxel’s season high. He did not walk a batter in the 123-pitch effort.
  • It was Traxel’s first career shutout, and fifth complete game, with four of the nine-inning variety. No UCR base runner reached scoring position until the seventh. Traxel escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth by inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. He retired the side in order for the fourth time in the ninth with two final punch-outs.
  • Traxel ignited a tremendous weekend pitching performance for the Matadors, as they went on to two more combined shutouts by scores of 5-0 and 1-0 to entirely blank the Highlanders and set a new Division I-era program record for consecutive shutouts.
  • Traxel moved his win-loss record to 4-2 on the year, and lowered his season ERA from 4.47 to 3.71.
  • Traxel is the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his four seasons at CSUN, and is the first Matador hurler chosen this year, after current staff mates Gavin Lizik and Blake Sodersten in 2021.

Also nominated: Jason Franks (Cal Poly), Nolan Meredith (UC Davis), Nick Pinto (UC Irvine), Blaze Koali’i Pontes (Hawai’i)
