Hawai’i freshman Momo Sugiyama opened her collegiate career with gusto, first helping her team to the top of the leaderboard at the HPSU Sharks Shootout to open the season. The Rainbow Wahine won the event by 58 strokes over Division II schools Hawai’i Pacific and Hawai’i-Hilo, and Sugiyama closed as the event runner-up.

Sugiyama captured medalist honors at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational with a 1-under 212 total. Her individual win paced Hawai’i to earn the team title by one stroke over Sacramento State in the 17-team field that also included fellow Big West teams Long Beach State and UC Irvine.

The Australia native shot 3-under 68 in the final round to become UH's 10th all-time medalist, vaulting five spots up the leaderboard after her bogey-free final round. Sugiyama closed the event as the only golfer in the 93-player field to play under-par golf.
