Record 634 Named To Big West Spring All-Academic Team

2020 Big West Spring All-Academic Team

The Big West Spring All-Academic Team included a record 634 student-athletes, obliterating the old mark of 456 set in 2018.

The 634 recipients were honored in the sports of baseball, softball, beach volleyball, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, and women’s water polo. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, compete one full year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and competed in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests. Track and field was exempt from the participation requirement this year as that season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All nine full member institutions were represented impressively, with UC Davis collecting a conference-high 82 all-academic honorees. Cal Poly produced 76 representatives, while Long Beach State had 75, Hawai‘i 74 and UC Santa Barbara 72. UC Irvine garnered 61 certificates and UC Riverside 56. CSUN tallied 51 honorees and Cal State Fullerton 50.

UC San Diego, which became a full-fledged Big West member on July 1, totaled 23 honorees in the sports of men’s volleyball and women’s water polo. CSU Bakersfield, which also joined the Big West on July 1, had seven all-academic selections in beach volleyball. Sacramento State, an associate member in beach volleyball, also had seven honorees.
