• CSUN senior Jayson Newman earned his first career Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award, hitting .500 to help his team to a 3-0 record.
• The designated hitter racked up seven hits as the Matadors defeated Washington State (3-1), Fordham (12-5) and Grand Canyon (6-2). CSUN remained undefeated at 7-0, the program’s best start to a season since 1993.
• Newman hit a game-tying home run in the eventual win over Washington State.
• He tallied a career-high four hits in a comeback win over Fordham, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. His RBI single in the seventh gave CSUN the lead and helped spark a seven-run outburst.
• Newman helped CSUN conclude the GCU Classic with a win over the hosts with a 2-for-5 performance and a run scored.
• He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 19 straight games, dating back to last season.

• Cal Poly freshman Drew Thorpe tantalized in his first ever start in front of the Baggett Stadium faithful, tossing eight shutout innings in a performance worthy of Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades.
• The 6-foot-4 right-hander struck out 13 BYU hitters in a 10-0 victory in Saturday’s first game of a doubleheader.
• The 13 strikeouts were just two shy of Cal Poly’s Division I record spanning 26 years.
• Thorpe scattered four hits with one walk, retiring the side in order four times and striking out the side in the fourth inning. He retired 12 straight Cougars at one point
• Thorpe has had an impressive start to his collegiate career after throwing seven effective innings in a no-decision against then-No. 1 Vanderbilt a week earlier, a game Cal Poly won 9-8. Thorpe has a 1-0 record and 1.20 ERA after his first two collegiate starts.
