Big West Women's Water Polo Tournament Central
With another tight race in the regular season in the books, the 2019 Big West Women’s Water Polo Tournament field is set. This year’s tourney returns to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on the campus of Long Beach State.
The first round kicks off with a pair of matchup on Friday, April 26. Fourth-seeded UC Santa Barbara faces the host #5 seed Beach in the opener at 1pm, just eight days after the the Gauchos topped LBSU in Santa Barbara. The next match at 3pm features #6 seed CSUN taking on #3 seed UC Davis. The two losing teams from the first round will face off in the fifth place match on Saturday at 11am.
The regular season co-champions UC Irvine and Hawai’i secured first round byes. The Anteaters earned the #1 seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over the Rainbow Wahine on April 5. UCI will take the pool on Saturday at 1pm against the UCSB/LBSU winner. UH will follow at 3pm against the CSUN/UCD victor.
The third place match will be the first of two games on Sunday, pitting the losing teams from the semifinals against one another at 12 pm.
The semifinal winners will then face of at 2 pm with the Tournament crown and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Record Chasing
The chase for the all-time goals record will stretch into next week for Hawai’i’s Irene Gonzalez and UC Irvine’s Mary Brooks. Gonzalez has 218 career goals which places her third on the all-time list, just six goals shy of tying former UCI great Jessy Cardey for second. Meanwhile Brooks’ 205 goals is seventh all-time.
