Tanner Murray tied a single-game school record and Clayton Andrews reeled off another double-digit strikeout performance as the duo from UC Davis and Long Beach State claimed baseball weekly honors.
TANNER MURRAY, UC DAVIS – FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman • SS • Ben Lomond, Calif. • San Lorenzo Valley HS
➜ UC Davis freshman Tanner Murray earned his first career Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award, leading the offense with a .529 average over four games.
➜ The shortstop had three multi-hit performances and nine hits in 17 at-bats as the Aggies posted a 2-2 record. He posted a .579 on-base percentage and slugged .824 for the week.
➜ Murray’s best effort came in the Big West series finale against Hawai‘i. He finished 5-for-5 at the dish – a home run shy of the cycle – and tied the program single-game record with three doubles in the 10-3 victory.
➜ Murray became the eighth Aggie in the school’s Division I era to record five hits in a game.
➜ In the win over UH, Murray also notched a leadoff triple in the third that led to one of his three runs scored. Murray also had three RBI, one coming on an RBI-double in the sixth and the other two via a 2-RBI two-bagger in the seventh.
➜ He went 2-for-4 with a walk in the series opener against UH. Earlier in the week, he had two hits, a run scored and two RBI in a 7-3 victory against San Jose State.
Others nominated: Hank LoForte (Cal State Fullerton); Justin Toerner (CSUN); Matt Reitano (UC Irvine); Nathan Webb (UC Riverside); Michael McAdoo (UC Santa Barbara); Kekai Rios (Hawai‘i)
CLAYTON ANDREWS, LONG BEACH STATE – PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Junior • LHP • Rohnert Park, Calif. • Cabrillo College
➜ Junior Clayton Andrews became the third member of Long Beach State’s starting rotation to garner Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors as the southpaw stymied UC Irvine over a career-best eight-plus innings.
➜ Andrews prevailed over UCI counterpart Taylor Rashi in a classic pitcher’s duel. Andrews matched his career high with 11 strikeouts and reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season.
➜ He walked just one and yielded five hits – the fifth a leadoff infield single in the ninth that removed him from the game as he attempted to go the distance in Saturday's 1-0 Dirtbag victory.
➜ Andrews also struck out 11 in his previous start against Fresno State on Mar. 31, but got no run support in a 2-0 loss. Andrews ranks No. 2 in the Big West with 58 strikeouts.
➜ The junior college transfer lowered his ERA to 2.66 on the year. Over his last three starts spanning 21.2 innings, Andrews is 2-1 with a 1.24 ERA.
