Schuknecht Fuels Cal Poly Offense In San Francisco Sweep

Cal Poly senior John Schuknecht (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) posted an .833 slugging percentage with three doubles, a triple and a home run in a three-game sweep of San Francisco, capturing Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week accolades.

He smacked a two-run home run in the sixth inning of Sunday’s 7-6 victory.  The long ball snapped a 3-3 tie and enabled the Mustangs to secure the series sweep.  Schuknecht went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Schuknecht had three straight multi-hit games against the Dons.  He went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday’s 2-1 win in game one of a doubleheader.  In the nightcap, he turned on the power with two doubles and a triple among his three hits and drove in two more runs as the Mustangs won 10-5.

The right fielder also had a pair of RBIs in Tuesday’s 6-5 victory over Pepperdine.  He was responsible for 11 of the team’s 25 runs for the week.  Schuknecht hit .389 (7-for-18) as the Mustangs have started out 10-2 for the second time in three seasons.

Others nominated: Timmy Richards (Cal State Fullerton); Fred Smith (CSUN); Garrett Hampson (Long Beach State); Ryan Anderson (UC Davis); Keston Hiura (UC Irvine); Thomas Walker (UC Riverside); Jacob Sheldon-Collins (Hawai‘i)

Rodriguez Tosses Three-Hit Shutout

Striking out a career-high 12 batters, CSUN senior Angel Rodriguez (Winnetka, Calif./Glendale College) secured Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors as he hurled a three-hit shutout.

The right-hander took care of business on the east coast as he went the distance in a 1-0 victory over George Mason on Tuesday.  He scattered just three hits on the afternoon, and only one cleared the infield.  He did not allow a base runner to move into scoring position after the third inning, and yielded just two hits over the final six frames.

Rodriguez also showed impeccable control with just one walk.  The shutout is the first of Rodriguez’s career and his second career complete game.

Others nominated: Justin Calomeni (Cal Poly); Blake Quinn (Cal State Fullerton); Austin McGeorge (Long Beach State); Matt Blais (UC Davis); Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine); Tyler Musgraves (UC Riverside); Noah Davis (UC Santa Barbara); Brendan Hornung (Hawai‘i)
