Extra base power and a no-hitter earned Cal State Fullerton teammates J.D. Davis and Justin Garza Big West Baseball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively.

Davis Bangs Out Five Extra Base Hits In 4-0 Week

Cal State Fullerton junior J.D. Davis (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) batted .562 with five extra base hits to earn Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week accolades.

Davis went 9-for-16 at the plate to help the Titans close the regular season on a seven-game winning streak and clinch the program’s 23rd consecutive NCAA postseason bid.  He had two doubles, a triple and two home runs as he posted a 1.188 slugging percentage in a 4-0 week.

The right fielder started out the week going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to help Fullerton trounce USC, 17-3, in a midweek game.  He added a pair of doubles against the Trojans.

Helping the Titans outscore Cal State Northridge 13-2 in a series sweep, Davis was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI in a 4-2 win in Thursday’s opener.  He belted his fourth and fifth home runs of the season in Friday’s 3-0 shutout, finishing the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

His 1-for-4 effort on Saturday extended his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games.

Others nominated: Richard Prigatano (Long Beach State); Kaeo Aliviado (Hawai‘i)

Garza Becomes Fourth Titan To Throw No-Hitter

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Justin Garza (Ontario, Calif./Bonita HS) garnered Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors, throwing a no-hitter against Cal State Northridge.

Garza etched his name in Titan lore as the fourth hurler to accomplish the feat in the program’s 40-year Division I history, joining Kirk Saarloos, Ted Silva and Longo Garcia on the list.  Garza’s gem came more than 13 years after Saarloos tossed his no-hitter against Pacific on Apr. 9, 2001.

Coincidentally, the no-hitter for Garza also marked the first complete game of his career.  He walked three and equalled his career high with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory.  Garza fanned a batter in every inning except the sixth.

The no-hitter was the 16th in Big West history, and the first since Apr. 20, 2012 when UC Irvine’s Andrew Thurman achieved one against Long Beach State.

Others nominated:
Josh Frye (Long Beach State); Dylan Stuart (UC Riverside); Matt Cooper (Hawai‘i)
