Senior Jessy Cardey keyed fifth-ranked UC Irvine's run to a share of the conference title and the tournament No. 1 seed with one of the best performances of her career, as she garnered Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week accolades.
The attacker collected five goals to help the Anteaters to a pivotal 11-5 victory at No. 8 Cal State Northridge on Sunday. The win improved UCI to 4-0 in Big West play and clinched the program's fourth straight 20-win season. Cardey notched five or more goals for the fourth time in her career. She converted three penalty shots in the match, and assisted on three additional goals, giving her a role in eight of UCI's 11 goals.
Cardey scored an additional goal in Friday's 6-3 triumph at No. 15 UC Santa Barbara. For Cardey, she vaulted into second place all-time in UCI history with 211 career goals.
UCI, now 20-7 on the year, has won nine of its last 10 matches and enters next week's Big West Tournament at Long Beach State as the top seed for the third time in the last four seasons.
