Cal State Fullerton senior Mark Anguiano and UC Davis sophomore Betty Chen were named Big West Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Month for February.

Anguiano Earns Folino Invitational Title

Senior Mark Anguiano (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) led Cal State Fullerton to the Folino Invitational championship with a tournament record low score, and garnered Big West Men’s Golfer of the Month honors for February.

Anguiano shattered the lowest-ever individual tournament score when he carded a 12-under 204.  Anguiano shot rounds of 66-68-70 and bested the previous record of 212 (-1), held by Geoff Gonzalez of Cal Poly at the 2011 event.  Anguiano’s play also led the Titans to the Folino Invitational team title, marking the first time in the three-year history of the event that the host school finished in first place.  It also represented the Titans’ third overall tournament championship this season.

The Whittier, Calif. native also competed in two other tournaments.  He tied for 23rd among 82 competitors at the Arizona Intercollegiate, shooting an opening round 71 en route to an 8-over score of 221.  In addition, he fired an 11-over 227 (74-78-75) at the Jones Invitational to finish 26th overall in a field of 66.  The Titans placed fifth at the tournament.

Others nominated: Matt Hansen (UC Davis); Pete Fernandez (UC Irvine); David Gazzolo (UC Riverside)

Chen Posts Two Top-10 Finishes

UC Davis sophomore Betty Chen (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley HS) posted back-to-back top-10 placings in tournament action to collect Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month honors for February.  It is the second straight honor for Chen, who won in October during the fall season.

Chen averaged 72.2 strokes over her five rounds, an average that was three shots better than her next closest teammate.  She fired a 3-under 69 at the UC Irvine Invitational that represented the team’s low score for the month.  Rounds of 75 and 72 helped Chen finish with a 54-hole total of 216, helping her tie for fourth overall.  The UCI Invitational featured five Big West teams and Chen was the highest individual finisher among conference players.  UC Davis finished sixth overall as a team.

Earlier in the month, Chen recorded a tie for eighth (in a field of 75) at the Peg Barnard Invitational.  She totaled a 145 (73-72) for 54 holes and helped the Aggies forge a second place team showing.

Others nominated: Clariss Guce (Cal State Northridge); Shawnee Martinez (Long Beach State); Savannah Vilaubi (UC Riverside)
