Cal State Northridge junior Kelcie Ferreira (Trinidad & Tabago/Providence Catholic) collected the Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week award, helping the Matadors to a 3-1 record and fifth place finish at the Triton Invitational.
The fifth place showing represented the best for the Matador program in the history of that tournament. Ferreira played a large role as she tallied six goals, five assists and 12 steals in the four games. The Matadors defeated three nationally ranked teams in No. 13 Indiana (9-8), No. 20 Santa Clara (13-5) and No. 12 Long Beach State (4-3).
In the tourney opener, Ferreira provided the heroics as she scored her only goal with two seconds left in the match to lead CSUN to the 9-8 victory over Indiana. She added a season-high four steals in the match.
After notching a hat trick against Santa Clara, Ferreira returned for the fifth place match and delivered two important goals to help CSUN slip past LBSU, 4-3, in double overtime. She tied her season best with four steals against the 49ers.
CSUN is now 7-3 on the season.
