Freshman Josh Guerra helped Long Beach State capture its sixth straight weekend series and UC Irvine senior Crosby Slaught carried the majority of the load in a one-hit shutout, earning the duo Big West Baseball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively.

Guerra Slugs 1.000 In Series Win Over Cal State Northridge

Josh Guerra (Downey, Calif./Downey HS) helped Long Beach State win its sixth weekend series in a row with an outstanding effort at the plate to garner Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honors.

The freshman hit .500 (6-for-12) and slugged 1.000 as the Dirtbags took two of three from Cal State Northridge last weekend.  Among his six hits was a double, triple and home run, and he finished the series with two runs scored and six RBI.

In Friday’s series-opening 8-2 win, Guerra set an LBSU season-high with four hits, knocking in three runs and scoring the game-winning run in the sixth inning.

Guerra then slammed a solo home run in Sunday’s 12-3 win that accounted for both the game-winning run and RBI.  He ended the day 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

Slaught Throws Seven Shutout Innings In Win Versus UC Riverside

Crosby Slaught (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) tossed seven shutout innings of one-hit ball to lead UC Irvine to a series sweep of UC Riverside, earning him Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades.

The seven innings represented the longest outing of the season for Slaught, who combined for the team’s fifth shutout of the year.

Slaught walked three and struck out four while throwing just 84 pitches as UC Irvine improved to 8-7 in Big West play.
